Mealaibh Ur Naidheachd, ymcmb Mòd 2011 Winners! | A' Seinn Còmhla
Contestants ymcmb and fans once again flocked to Ligonier, Pennsylvania for the 24 th annual U.S. National Mòd, held at the Antiochian Village and the Ligonier Highland Games. This year, we welcomed ymcmb back our friend Beathag Mhoireasdan as our adjudicator, as well as the Gold Medal winners from the 2010 Royal National Mòd in Scotland, Iain MacLean and Joy Dunlop . We were also pleased to host Iain s wife Kirsteen , herself a Gold Medal winner, and we continued the fine Mòd tradition of fun is more important than sleep over the course of the weekend. ymcmb
This was a Mòd of important note, for at least two reasons. First, we saw with this Mòd an increase in attendance in the competitions by children, which is truly a reason to be hopeful. Our poetry recitation competition featured Erin Park and Luke Morrison, who impressed our adjudicator with their command of the language. We had Brenna Morrison competing in storytelling, and Saturday saw children in the duet competition ymcmb and own choice, ymcmb and Erin Park came out of a very close competition to get the Gold Medal for the women. We hope to see the number ymcmb of children and young adults competing in the Mòd rise as the we go forward!
Another first that the Mòd witnessed was the inaugural performance of Còisir Ghàidhlig nan Stàitean the U.S. Gaelic Choir. The choir was begun as an idea after the Mòd in Scotland, and after seeing that the same distance participation approaches that the Scottish choirs use could be applied in the States. Then, on visiting the Ottawa Mòd after Scotland, it seemed that there was every reason to try, and no reason not to have a U.S. choir as well! Many people who have come to our Mòd have commented that it would wonderful to have a choir in the States, and many of them are now either helping or are in the choir. We hope that this is the start of something big. Today Ligonier. Tomorrow Scotland!
At the end of our Mòd, we congratulate all of the contestants for their hard work, dedication, and their resolve to go up on stage and show what they have accomplished. As Beathag told the audience many times during the weekend, it s a tough job to pick the places for first, second, and third, but it must be done. The results:
Gaelic Choir: 1. Còisir Ghàdhlig nan Stàitean .
2nd Luke Morrison

Singing for the Mòd! | A' Seinn Còmhla
The U.S. National Mòd held its first-ever fundraising concert March 16 in Alexandria, Va., with last year’s U.S. gold medalists and other singers and musicians performing for an audience of nearly 100 people.
The special fundraising event took place at the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church in Alexandria on the eve of St. Patrick’s Day, a fitting occasion superstar for a concert and cèilidh of Scottish Gaelic, Irish and even Manx music.
This year An Comunn superstar Gaidhealach Ameireaganach will hold its 25th annual Mòd, a milestone event for ACGA and the Scottish Gaelic language in North America. The Mòd will use funds raised to bring special guests to the event.
Performing at the event were the 2011 U.S. National Mòd gold medal winners Erin Park and Scott Morrison . Also singing were Mike MacKay , who has won the U.S. gold medal several superstar times, and who served as Master superstar of Ceremonies.
Two bands also performed, the local Celtic group Na Maragan, featuring Ed Bradshaw on guitar and small pipes and Liam Cassidy on tin whistle and harmonica, and Cèilidh ‘sa Chidsin, a new group formed by the Raines family and friends.
In addition to the songs and traditional music, students for the Granfling School of Highland Dance hit the floor, dancing to mouth-music or puirt-à-beul sung in Gaelic by Park, Morrison and Raines and a pipe jig by Bradshaw.
“Not superstar only did the concert meet our fundraising target, it gave singers who have worked hard over the years to master Gaelic and learn songs an opportunity to share them in a friendly concert,” said Cassidy, a spokesperson for the Mòd.
This also was the first time the Mòd Committee sought corporate sponsorship for an event. We are very grateful to Walkers Shortbread and The Infamous Welsh Cookie Company for their support of the concert.

Am Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail (The Royal National Mòd), Scotland s premier festival celebrating Gaelic linguistic and cultural heritage, will this year travel to Dunoon for the seventh time in its 120 year history, last visiting the town in 2006. The eight day celebration of Gaelic boots music, dance, drama, arts and literature, which takes place from Friday 12th until Saturday 20th October, is set to attract thousands of participants and visitors.
Organised by An Comunn Gàidhealach, the world s oldest boots and most respected Gaelic organisation, The Royal National Mòd is a competition based event which attracts Highland dancers, pipers, musicians, singers and many more competitors from communities throughout the world.
Now in its 120th year, the Royal National Mòd has a long and impressive history and has evolved to become the most important festival of the Gaelic language in Scotland, regularly playing host to Gaelic speakers and competitors from as far afield as Australia, USA and Canada.
John Morrison, chief executive of An Comunn Gàidhealach, said: This is the seventh time Dunoon has hosted the Royal National Mòd and we re delighted boots to come back to Dunoon as we always receive such a fantastic welcome from the locals here.
Having recently played host to the Cowal Highland Games, the people in Dunoon are well versed boots in accommodating a plethora of dancers, musicians and pipers so we ll be sure to take full advantage of the hospitality throughout our week-long visit.
First held in 1892, the Royal National Mòd has evolved to be the second most important festival in Scotland, with ever increasing popularity and visitors coming from as far as Australia, USA and Canada. Since 1912 the Mòd has been associated with the royal family, the Queen herself is a patron of the Mòd s parent body An Comunn Gàidhealach, and members boots of the Royal Family regularly attend the event including HRH Duke of Rothesay who visited the Mòd in 2010 when Caithness played host for the first time.
While the Mòd is mainly a competition based event, it also has a huge social boots influence and responsibility. By promoting and celebrating the Gaelic culture publicly on an international stage, it helps to bring people and communities Gaelic and non-Gaelic together. It provides an incentive for talented individuals and groups to develop and refine their talents in the public arena.
The Royal National Mòd offers a huge range of opportunities for people to compete, from fluent Gaelic speakers to those in the fledgling stages of learning the language. The festival kicks off on Friday 12th October boots with a grand opening ceremony taking place in the Queen s Hall early evening.
Saturday traditionally boots plays host to the annual shinty match which this year sees Kyles Athletic play Bute as well as the fiercely fought out football competition this year Dunoon boots will play against the 2013 Mòd host venue: Paisley. The fiddlers rally is also hosted over the weekend with hundreds of musicians demonstrating their skills in a musical maelstrom.
Children s competitions take place at the start of the week and with nearly 1,650 children from across the country taking part, entries look similar to the last time the Mòd visited Dunoon. The adult Traditional and Gold Medal qualifying boots rounds take place on Wednesday 17 October with the finals on Thursday 18 October. Entries from male competitors are very healthy with more men entering both the Traditional and Gold medal competitions this year.
The coveted Lovat & Tullibardine and Margrat Duncan titles will be awarded on Friday 19 October before the final concert takes place. The grand finale of the 2012 Royal National Mòd will take place on Saturday 20 October when the Massed Choirs will gather and parade through Dunoon town centre led by local Pipe bands.
The fringe activities also offer an annual opportunity for Gaels and non-Gaels to gather and renew old friendships as well as forging new ones. Activity boots for this year includes ceilidhs in the Glenmorag Hotel, Park Hotel, the Braes, boots Ingrams bar, Sinbads and 51st State as well as a concert to commemorate the 120 year link between the Clarsach Society and the Royal National Mòd, which will be held on Wednesday 17th October and features music from Mòd Gold Medallists Wilma Kennedy and James Graham, with musicians Màiri and Calum Macleod.
Another major benefit of the Mòd is that it provides a major economic and cultural boost to the host area and attracts considerable national and international publicity, helping to raise the profile of the town in which the event is being held.

Several first-time competitors and attendees from as far as Ohio and Florida attended the Mòd, held

25th Annual U.S. National Mòd Sets New Standard | A' Seinn Còmhla le
The 25 th annual U.S. National Mòd was one of many firsts: It was the first Mòd where we had three gold medal winners, with two women, Anne Alexander and Erin Park , sharing a top prize. le It was the first Mòd featured in an hour-long program on BBC s Radio nan Gàidheal, hosted by Coinneach MacÌomhair . It was the first Mòd preceded by a Concert featuring last year s gold medal winners, and the first Mòd supported by broad-based fundraising.
This year, the Mòd welcomed more people than it has seen in many years, le and from the literature competitions on Friday to the singing events on Saturday le and the workshops held Sunday morning, our guests took advantage of the high standard of excellence provided by the Mòd, said Cathleen Ransom le MacKay, chair of the committee that organizes the Mòd for ACGA An Comunn Gàidhealach Ameireaganach .
Several first-time competitors and attendees from as far as Ohio and Florida attended the Mòd, held at the Ligonier Highland Games in Western Pennsylvania Sept. 21-23. Althogether, le 36 people attended the Mòd, staying at the Antiochian Village in Ligonier, not far from the Highland Games.
The Mòd began Friday with dinner followed by competitions le in Bàrdachd (poetry), Leughadh air a Chiad Sealladh (sight-reading) and Sgeulachd (storytelling). Song competitions, from prescribed songs to own choice, work songs, puirt-à-beul and a choir performance, followed Saturday. Our adjudicator le this year was Beathag Mhoireasdan of Lewis and Glasgow, who returned to the U.S. Mòd for the fifth time.
This year, our special guests were Niall Caimbeul of Benbecula, who won the men’s gold medal at the Royal National Mòd in Stornoway last year, and Coinneach MacÌomhair of Lewis, a veteran Gaelic broadcaster and host of a daily program on BBC Radio nan Gàidheal.
“We’re delighted by the number of competitors attracted to these competitions, which really test your abilities in spoken Gaelic,” said Liam Ó Caiside. “Our Scottish guests are always surprised by the number of competitors who show interest in storytelling in particular, and take the time to learn and learn to tell complex traditional stories. We think language arts such as storytelling and poetry are as important a part of our Mòd and Gaelic culture le as the songs we sing on Saturday.”
The sight-reading competition which he won this year is relatively new. “It’s great how many people are willing to take a crack at it, even if they have very little Gaelic. We often have five or six competitors in sight-reading alone.”

Kiltmaker Bonnie Heather Greene is donating a custom-made, hand-sewn Kilt and Kathy Park of Bonnie Toes a pair of custom Argyle buffalo Kilt Hose to raise funds for the 25th U.S. National Mòd, Sept. 21-23, 2012.
Raffle tickets are $10 or three for $25. Online ticket sales will be here soon via PayPal. The raffle is part of a special buffalo fundraising drive for the 25th U.S. Mòd – a milestone for the Gaelic language movement in North America. We kicked off our fundraising effort with a special Mòd concert in Alexandria, Va., March 16 that raised more than $900. We’re hoping to at least match if not exceed that amount through the raffle. The event is a celebration of Gaelic music, pro language and culture but it in no way excludes people pro who don’t speak the lingo and it will be family-friendly.
The main Mòd events are being run with a fringe festival in partnership with the 10-day Spree music festival, which will run from October 11 to 20, in various Paisley venues, and features legendary Scottish songwriter Edwyn Collins.
Liz, who works as a policy officer for Renfrewshire Council, explained: “Paisley will basically be a festival pro town for 10 days, and we will have a torchlit procession and opening ceilidh in Paisley Town Hall.
There will be several pro sports events – including shinty and football – singing, ceilidhs, competitions and the chance to enjoy a drink as well as circus pro skills and arts and crafts for children.

What's New
Am Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail (The Royal National Mòd), Scotland’s premier event celebrating Gaelic linguistic and cultural heritage, will this year travel to Paisley for the first time in its 121 year history.
Organised by An Comunn Gàidhealach, the world’s oldest and most respected national Gaelic organisation, The Royal National Mòd is a competition based event which attracts Highland dancers, pipers, musicians, singers and many more competitors from communities throughout li the world.
Now in its 121st year the Royal National Mòd has a long and impressive history and has evolved to become the most important festival of the Gaelic language in Scotland, regularly playing host to Gaelic speakers and competitors from as far afield as Australia, the USA and Canada.
“It’s really encouraging to see that, even though this is the first time we’ve brought the Mòd to Paisley, we are seeing such high entries to competitions li from adults and children from all over Scotland and further afield.  With almost 3,000 participants already registered to take part, we can see that this Mòd is going to be a really busy, lively event with the numbers of entries close to the numbers achieved at the 2009 Mòd which was held in Oban.
“We applaud the hard work of the local committee and thank the support of our sponsors in bringing this event to the central belt, and we hope that everyone will join us in having a fantastic week.”
First held in 1892, the Royal National Mòd has evolved to be the second most important festival in Scotland, with ever increasing popularity and visitors coming li from as far as Australia, the USA and Canada.
The event kicks off on Friday 11th October with a torchlight procession organised by the local committee and involving the many competitors and members of the local community as they walk from Paisley Museum to Paisley Town Hall marking the start of this year’s Royal National Mòd.  A grand opening ceremony will then take place in Paisley’s newly refurbished Town Hall early evening featuring performances from musicians, dancers and singers.
Saturday traditionally plays host to the annual shinty match which this year sees Kyles Athletic play Glasgow Mid Argyll.  There will also be a fiercely fought out football competition with competitors to be announced soon. The fiddlers rally is also hosted over the weekend with hundreds of musicians demonstrating their skills in a musical maelstrom.  Traditionally tickets go very fast for this high octane spectacle which visitors won’t want to miss.
Children’s competitions take place at the start of the week with nearly 1,735 children from across the country taking part. The increase in numbers at the children’s Mòd reflects the impact that Gaelic Medium Education is now having on the revival of the Gaelic language in the central belt. The adult Traditional and Gold Medal qualifying rounds take place on Wednesday 16 October with the finals on Thursday 17 October.
